SPIRIT BOARDS

Many years in the making, Martin’s Spirit Board series roots are in ancestral representations. The sculptures are inspired by a series of ingredients, including spiritual artifacts of Papua New Guinea’s Sepik River region, Octavia Butler’s Earthseed, living and past ancestors, travel to rainforests, and vivid dreams.

Deeply engaged with the art-making process, Martin utilizes traditional and contemporary tools, including computer-aided design, hand carving tools, lasers, and hand sewing. He carefully selects exotic solid and veneer woods, breathing new life into these timeless materials. Carving and sewing become an act of communion, a dialogue between seeing, feeling, and expressing. 

Through his work, Martin seeks to forge connections between the material and the metaphysical, inviting viewers to reflect on the unseen forces and relationships that shape our world. Martin’s artworks express an elemental philosophy that everything is connected. This is represented through the layering of glued or sewn veneer elements, symbolizing the threads that bind us, and the strength created from the mutual aid of the layered components.
